Welcome to the Clinical sEMG Workshop Days at Reykjavík University.
Join internationally recognised instructors and fellow healthcare professionals for two days of evidence-based learning focused on the clinical application of surface electromyography (sEMG). Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practical sessions, you’ll gain valuable knowledge and practical skills that can be applied directly in clinical practice, rehabilitation, and sports performance.
Whether you choose to attend one workshop or both, you’ll have the opportunity to expand your expertise, exchange ideas with colleagues, and learn from experienced clinicians in a collaborative environment.
To make planning your visit to Iceland as easy as possible, optional services such as accommodation, airport transfers, and activities can be added during the checkout process when you complete your registration.

Workshop Descriptions
Day 1 – Clinical sEMG in Shoulders
Date: October 9, 2026
Time: 09:00-15:30
Course Instructor: Dr. Harpa Helgadottir
This workshop focuses on the application of surface electromyography, SEMG, through assessment and correction of the coordinated interactivity of the trapezius and the serratus anterior. This coordinated interaction forms an essential force couple that enables efficient upward rotation and stabilization of the scapula during arm elevation. Clinicians addressing shoulder dysfunctions need to understand the force couple mechanism and be able to identify and correct dysfunction.
What will I learn?
In this workshop, participants will learn how to assess and interpret SEMG data, identifying
muscle imbalance between the serratus anterior, upper- and lower trapezius. Postural and
movement faults of the scapula, which may indicate imbalance in the scapulothoracic muscles,
will also be addressed. Subsequently, SEMG will be used to explore which exercises and
activation strategies work best to improve the activity of affected muscles, choosing and
maximizing the effect of exercises. Correction using neuromuscular re-education and biofeedback may be used to guide exercise prescription, enhance rehabilitation decision-making, and progression. Emphasis is placed on using SEMG as a practical tool in rehabilitation settings, addressing shoulder dysfunction as well as in preventive training in sports.
This course is for clinicians addressing shoulder dysfunctions and those interested in preventive
training in sports.
Why choose this workshop?
– Learn practical applications for the shoulder
– Identifying muscle imbalance around the Scapula.
– Explore exercise and muscle activation strategies
– Practical applications of sEMG in the clinic
Who should attend this course?
– Physical Therapist – Sports Physical Therapist – Atheletic Trainers – Strength & conditioning coaches – Rehabilitation clinicians – Chiropractors and osteopaths – Sports scientists – Personal trainers with an interest in rehabilitation – Ergonomist – Healthcare and exercise professionals interested in applying sEMG in clinical, rehabilitation, or performance settings
Programme:
The course is taught in person at the Open University in Reykjavík University from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
09:00-12:00 – Demonstration: Assessing the alignment and movement of the scapula. Application of SEMG in assessment and
correction of muscle imbalance in the serratus anterior and trapezius. SEMG to guide exercise
prescription, choosing, and maximizing the effect of exercises.

Day 2 – Clinical sEMG in Hamstring & ACL
Date: October 10, 2026
Time: 09:00-15:30
Course Instructor: Eduard Mias
This workshop focuses on how surface electromyography, sEMG, can be used to guide exercise prescription, support clinical reasoning, and enhance rehabilitation decision-making. Emphasis is placed on understanding what sEMG can show, how it should be interpreted, and how practitioners can apply this information in real-world exercise and rehabilitation settings.
The workshop combines theory and practical application. Participants will explore how sEMG can inform exercise selection, with specific focus on hamstring training, muscle activation strategies, and ACL rehabilitation. The aim is to move beyond simply observing muscle activity and instead use sEMG as a practical tool to support better programming, feedback, and progression. Throughout the workshop, participants will work with applied examples and practical demonstrations to understand how sEMG can be integrated into their own professional practice. The emphasis is on using objective muscle activation data responsibly, while recognising the strengths, limitations, and clinical context of sEMG.
Why choose this workshop?
– Gain an in-depth understanding of how sEMG can support exercise prescription and
rehabilitation practice.
– Learn how muscle activation data can inform exercise selection, progression, and individualisation.
– Develop a clearer understanding of hamstring function during different exercise tasks.
– Explore how sEMG can be used practically in hamstring training and rehabilitation.
– Understand how sEMG biofeedback can support ACL rehabilitation and neuromuscular retraining.
– Learn how to use real-time feedback to improve exercise execution and patient engagement.
– Increase confidence in interpreting sEMG data while recognising its limitations.
– Connect sEMG theory to practical decision-making in clinical, rehabilitation, and performance settings.
What will I learn?
– What sEMG is, what it measures, and how it can be used in exercise and rehabilitation contexts.
– How to interpret sEMG information when comparing exercises or assessing muscle activation strategies.
– How sEMG can support more targeted exercise prescription for athletes, patients, and active populations.
– How different hamstring exercises may influence activation patterns and training outcomes.
– How to apply sEMG during practical hamstring-focused exercise tasks.
– How sEMG can be used as a biofeedback tool during ACL rehabilitation.
– How real-time muscle activation feedback can support improved quadriceps and hamstring recruitment.
– How to integrate sEMG findings into professional reasoning, programming, and rehabilitation progression.
