Day 1, TUE or THU: WELCOME TO ICELAND (50 km/31 mls)

Land of Northern Light 2013-14.jpgThe Flybus shuttle brings travellers from Keflavík International Airport to Hotel Cabin and Centerhotel Plaza in Reykjavík where you spend one night. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland's capital on your own.

Day 2, WED or FRI: REYKJAVIK CITY TOUR, THE BLUE LAGOON & REYKJANES PENINSULA (220 km/137 mls)

At 09:00 meet your tour guide who shows the group the highlights of Iceland's exciting capital. Then head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula with its hot springs, mountains, bird cliffs, lighthouses and fishing villages. At the end of the day, we get to soak off our travels in the warm mineral rich waters of the famous Blue Lagoon. We stay for two nights in simple cottages in South Iceland. There is an option to upgrade to studio rooms at the Stracta Hotel in Hella. In the evening, we hear about the Northern Lights from our tour guide at Árhús Cabins. Naturally, once darkness falls, you are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights.

Day 3, THU or SAT: SOUTH ICELAND WITH OPTIONAL GLACIER HIKE (200 km/124 mls)

Today we head along the south coast and reach the area near the active volcano that is beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. We stop at the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which plunges from the mountain. Next, we visit Skógar folk museums, which contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artefacts from Iceland's past and several turf-built houses. Nearby is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country; the 60-meter high Skógafoss waterfall.
In the afternoon we offer an optional glacier walk. The Sólheimajökull glacier tongue extends from the great Mýrdalsjökull glacier, down to the sandy plains of the Icelandic south coast. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged and majestic rock formations thoroughly shaped by the glacier. On this fun, safe and easy to moderate glacier walk you get to explore the wonderland of ice sculptures, water cauldrons, ridges and deep crevasses on the breath-taking Sólheimajökull glacier. While enjoying all the features of the glacier and its spectacular surroundings, you will learn more about the behaviour of glaciers and their impact on nature. No technical requirements are needed for the tour as an experienced glacier guide will teach you how to use basic glacier equipment, such as crampons and an ice axe which is provided for glacier walk tours. The unique experience of a glacier walk on one of the many retreating glaciers of the world is sure to leave lasting memories. Duration of this activity is about 3 hours in total, about 90 minutes on the ice and about 30-40 min walk (one-way) from the parking lot to the glacier edge itself. The minimum age for the glacier hike is 10 years. You need to bring warm clothing, rain gear and hiking boots. The glacier hike can only be booked with the guide on day 2. The special price for the Land of Northern Lights group members is about ISK 14.000 (about EUR 120 per person) instead of ISK 14.900 official rate; prices are subject to change. Payment is due with the glacier hike company on day 3 in Icelandic Krona - cash only!

If you booked the trip without the glacier hike, then the tour continues further south where you can stroll on the black lava beach to see the amazing bird cliffs at Reynisfjara near Vík. In the evening there is another presentation about the Northern Lights. If the night is clear, you might see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens in dramatic shapes, colours, patterns and sizes. The grounds of Árhús Cabins and the Stracta Hotel in Hella are very large and dark and offer you a good location for Northern Lights search if the weather conditions are right. It requires patience, warm clothing and the excitement of "maybe there could be Northern Lights".

Day 4, FRI or SUN: HORSES & GOLDEN CIRCLE (210 km/130 mls)

Geysir hot springs.jpgIn the morning you learn about the Icelandic horse, its special qualities and history and visit a geothermal greenhouse. Travel the Golden Circle route. See steam rising from the Geysir geothermal fields as you arrive. There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur "the Churn" which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. Continue on to Gullfoss, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá River and attracts tourists and travellers in summer and winter. Head inland to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before returning to Reykjavík for your last night, either at Hotel Cabin or Centerhotel Plaza. An optional Northern Lights evening cruise can be booked while in the destination if the weather conditions are ideal.

Day 5, SAT or MON: DEPARTURE HOME (50 km/31 mls)

Individual transfer by Flybus airport shuttle from your guesthouse/hotel accommodation in Reykjavík to Keflavík Airport.

ACCOMMODATION: For this program, we use budget accommodation to offer an attractive package price. You get great value for money. The first and last nights are at Hotel Cabin, in Reykjavík, offering rooms (10m2) with shower/wc, a restaurant, and a bar. The 2nd & 3rd nights are at Árhús Cabins in Hella, South Iceland, where 23 simple cottages with shower/wc are located in a large garden right on the river banks in the village of Hella. Árhús Cabins are popular with outdoor active guests and families traveling with children. All cottages are equipped with a small kitchenette and free Wi-Fi. There is a restaurant on premises, and a public swimming pool and supermarket are in walking distance.

The tours can be booked with a hotel upgrade option. In Reykjavik overnight will be at Centerhotel Plaza in downtown Reykjavík. In Hella overnight will be in 24m2 studio rooms with kitchenette at Stracta Hotel, which offers a restaurant, hot tubs, and sauna on its premises. It is a 10-minute walk (750 m) from Stracta Hotel to Árhús Cabins in Hella where the guide gives the Northern Lights lectures and presentations. The Northern Lights movie is also shown at Stracta Hotel.

NOTE REGARDING DINNERS: In Reykjavik, the dinner is on your own. There are many restaurants for both fast food and a fine a la carte dining in Iceland's capital. The Árhús Cabins and Stracta Hotel in South Iceland offer a limited a la carte menu with a selection of fish, meat and vegetarian as the main course. Lunch stops are made at small country restaurants or petrol station diners.

NATURE FEES: There is a possibility that some of the natural attractions around Iceland might charge an entrance fee during the trip. These entrance fees are not included in the tour price and need to be paid by all tour members additionally on the spot when entering any of these natural sites. Locations, amount of entrance fee, form of payment and other details are not known at present and are subject to change.

NORTHERN LIGHTS: This program includes during 2 evenings a combination of presentations, lectures, film and guided Northern Lights searches in the garden of Árhús Cabins in Hella, South Iceland, about 10-minute walk from Stracta Hotel. Árhús Cabins and Stracta Hotel in South Iceland offer a Northern Lights wake-up call for guests that register for that special service at the reception. The tour is dependent on weather, and therefore sightings are not guaranteed. The Northern Lights are in the northern hemisphere from September through April but are only visible when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many of natural wonders, the Northern Lights are ephemeral – they may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone (it is not a TV show that you can just turn on and off). But it is worth the patience which is much required. Because they are a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside while looking for them. It is best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else will make you comfortable while you await patiently this truly outstanding event. For the best photos, we recommend using a tripod.

CHANGE OF PROGRAM: Itineraries may be subject to change at short notice during severe weather conditions and certain outdoor activities/day trips may be canceled during the winter season in Iceland. In these rare cases, where situations of force majeure apply, excursions/activities cannot be refunded but the local guides will try their best to find reasonable alternatives where and whenever possible.

BOOKINGS & FURTHER INFORMATION: Either via our international tour operator network - see here

or directly by email gjtravel@gjtravel.is and we process your booking by personal email communication. We will send you a confirmation and invoice. Payment is due latest 4 weeks prior arrival. We accept international bank transfer, Visa or MasterCard. In general, there is a non-refundable booking fee/deposit of up to 20% to secure space on the tour. Once paid, we will send the vouchers and travel documents. Unfortunately, we do not offer an online booking engine for this tour.

CANCELLATION: A cancellation fee of 20% of the tour price and accommodation will be retained by us for cancellations made from 4 to 8 weeks before departure. From 28 days until 8 days before departure, the fee is 50%. No refund is possible for cancellations less than 8 days before departure, or for no-shows, and a tour begun but not completed. The exchange of one arrangement for another must be agreed by us beforehand.

Hi Susie, I just wanted to thank you for your help with preparing for my trip. I got back on Monday, and I had an absolutely lovely time. The GJ travel group was fantastic, and my guide/bus/accommodations were really great...especially for someone on my budget! Thank you for everything. Thanks again, Samantha (booked through Nordic Saga Travel, USA)

I just had to write and tell you what an AMAZING time Tracy and I had in your gorgeous country! The trip was so beyond our expectations- the sights, the colors, the emotions and the experiences. We had visions in our mind before we left and we were completely blown away by what we were able to do. We opted for the glacier hike which was incredible, including a visit to an ice cave which I could never have expected. The guide was informative and the trip kept on schedule so that was great. The Blue Lagoon was just outstanding and I must say the coach was supremely comfortable - we loved that there were USB outlets in each seat. With so many pictures being taken, phones easily ran out of battery! The one huge surprise was Arhus- the website really does not do it justice. It was just perfect for what we needed to do there- the cabins were comfortable, the restaurant was lovely and we had the ideal position at the end right by the river, so we were able to see the northern lights from our window!!! Thank you again for everything. Just gorgeous, you should be very proud of your gem and your fine services! Tracy and Gabriella, USA

Hi Eyrun. Hope you are fine! I am Satheesh and I got the privilege of having you as my tour guide during 03 April 2015 to 05 April 2015 'The Land Of Northern Lights' tour. Hi guys, Just got a call from Mrs Brown who returned from Iceland last night and is still buzzing with excitement! She said they had such a brilliant time and the information they received before the trip was very valuable. She mentioned that the tour was a brilliant value for money and exceeded their expectations. Tour guide was excellent and very informative and, with the amount of information they received, they feel they have been on a holiday for a month not only 5 days. They also saw the Northern Lights on a Friday night and guide knocked on everybody's doors to make sure nobody misses them. Thank you all for happy customers! Best regards, Daina Kontrima Sales Manager, Baltic Travel UK

Dear Sir or Madam. Firstly can I say how much we enjoyed our tour of Iceland with the guide "Rock". He was great fun, passionate about Iceland and gave us a very good feel for the Saga's that are so important to the history of Iceland. We got an excellent feel for the rapid change the rural society has undergone over the last 100 years. The weather in Iceland was much better than the weather back in the UK and it was unexpected to go back to the UK in October with a suntan. It was such a shame that we didn't see the Northern lights but it does give me us an excuse to come back. Many thanks once again for such a great trip. David (booked via Regent Holidays UK)

We enjoyed the tour. So unfortunate we saw no northern lights but understand you cannot guarantee that. The guide was very kind, caring and flexible under stressful weather situation. She kept everyone cheerful, occupied and safe. She was knowledgeable and pleasant all the time. The accommodations were acceptable and breakfast was fine. The driver handled the extremely difficult winter driving conditions very well. Felt safe. (booked through Brekke Tours USA)

The guide cleverly re-arranged bits dependent on the weather which was much appreciated. Martina was an excellent guide and so friendly. The accommodation were fine. Didn't need to be posh as we were out and about all day. We loved the cottages. Breakfast was nice but more hot stuff would be nice. Would also like it if more meals were included.

Dear Daina
Just a big 'thank you' for organising such a fantastic trip to Iceland. The three-day tour gave us such a good insight to the country - from its' history to its' geography was a great experience. To see the volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, etc was memorable and to top it off, we managed to see the Northern Lights on Friday evening - the highlight of this trip. We will certainly come back to you for future 'northern' travels. Many thanks Alan (booked through Baltic Travel UK)

Excellent tour. I learned so much, saw and enjoyed so much. The guide was absolutely great. Would seek to have her aside again. So knowledgeable, helpful and fun. It is a budget tour and therefore accommodation is basic but fine. The first lunch on the tour was fantastic, beautifully cooked. Great driver (booked through On The Go Tours UK)
----------------
Only disappointed about the cloudy weather, the tour itself was amazing. Very knowledgeable guide and passionate about her country. Cosy and comfortable accommodation, yummy meals. Excellent driver (booked through Nordic Travel Australia)

Best vacation I've ever had. The tour group is just the right size, the guide Katarina is a great guide and the views are spectacular. The guide is extremely knowledgeable about every area and its history and has numerous interesting anecdotes about it all. And she is very friendly and fun to be with. Accommodation is simple but clean and neat as a pin. Warm and cozy - I slept like a log every night. Delicious meals. Best Chef Salad I have ever had. Wonderful meat soup. Careful driver. Re: Iceland Tour October 13 – 18, 2014: Dear Hilke: I have a great photo of you taken by my sister, Jill, and I am looking at it and thinking about what a wonderful journey through geologic time our trip was through your beautiful country. I am not a travel aficionado like Jill, but I was so struck by your wide range of knowledge, your infectious sense of fun, and how you were somehow able to make our trip with all of our other travel companions feel so intimate. It was really quite wonderful and I feel blessed that we "lucked out", as it were, and you were assigned to the tour as our guide. In short, Þakka þér fyrir, Hilke. I do not think I will be forgetting either you or our splendid expedition any time in the near future. Again, but this time in English: Thank you so much!!! Deirdre Evans, USA / P.S. Have a wonderful Christmas holiday – but do watch out for those crazy little Yule Lads!

Dear Kelsey. The tour has finished. Can you please pass onto the Icelandic tour company the following Bjorn Erik was a terrific tour guide. Patient and informative but gave us time to just absorb the scenery. The accommodation was more than adequate and very clean. The Icelandic guesthouse staff were very helpful. The driver I can't recall his name was very safe and competent. We had some hard driving conditions and I felt safe at all times. Some tour buses passed us in some scary sport but our driver was steady. It was a top tour and left me wanting more. Thank you for all your timely and efficient service. Best wishes Shane (booked through On the Go Tours Australia)

To whom it may concern. Having just returned from a trip to Iceland and a three-day tour I feel it's right that I highlight one factor of the trip and that is Thor Ostensen our driver. This guys professionalism and skill was paramount throughout. His knowledge and personal experience and the warmth and friendliness given was second to none. A true consummate professional on every aspect. As a result of his persona my partner and I will be returning to Iceland in December. Thor is a true ambassador not only for Gj travel but for Icelanders. Stephen Jones & Nicola Barry (booked through Baltic Travel UK)

Hello at GJ-Travel. I just wanted to email you and say thank you so much for arranging our trip to Iceland – we did the Land of the Northern Lights tour. It was absolutely fantastic. It is 100% the only way I would recommend to visit Iceland for first timers. It was SUCH amazing value and we loved every second of it. Not sure if you are able to pass on a message to our guide? She was called Hilke – lovely lady and such a wonderful guide. Anyway, she told us the stories of the Elves and the Elf stones. When we were out looking for the lights, I saw a rock among all the snow and told her that I had found our Elf Stone. I put my hand on it and asked the elves to be nice and let us see the Northern Lights. I then asked Hilke how to say please in Icelandic. So I stood and said it a few times to the stone. A few in our group laughed but I felt it important! Anyway, we never did get to see the lights. BUT when we flew home, it was just Gemma and myself from the group on our flight and guess what?! We saw the lights! The only ones in our group! We couldn't believe it and put it down to the fact we spoke the elves! Can you please pass this onto Hilke? Thanks Sarah
