Day 1: WELCOME TO ICELAND
Arrival and overnight in Reykjavik/Keflavik.
Day 2: SOUTH SHORE
Explore the glaciers and bird cliffs of South Iceland with some shorter walks today. 3 nights stay in the Skaftafell area.
Day 3: SKAFTAFELL
Full day hiking at Skaftafell National Park.
Day 4: VATNAJÖKULL
Visit Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and more hiking in the Vatnajökull National Park region.
Day 5: EAST FJORDS
Drive along the scenic East Fjords with several hiking options. Stay 2 nights in the East.
Day 6: EAST FJORDS
Full day hiking in the Borgarfjördur-Eystri region.
Day 7: IN THE EAST
Full day hiking in the Hallormsstadur-Hengifoss-Egilsstadir region. Evening flight (not included in price) to Reykjavik. Overnight in the capital.
Day 8: DEPARTURE

Note: Most hikes are easy to moderate with options of 4-6 hours walks per day. Rental car, domestic flights and airport transfers not included in the hotel package.

GJ-031 DRIVE-HIKE Skaftafell & East Iceland in 8 days / 7 nights

Day 1: WELCOME TO ICELAND (49 km/30 miles)
Arrival and overnight in Reykjavik/Keflavik.

Day 2: SOUTH SHORE (330 km/205 miles)
Visit the waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Nearby is the lovely Skogar folk museum with turf houses. The bird cliffs of Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara are simply amazing. We recommend also a stroll on the black lava beaches of Vík.  In South Iceland you find the two glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjökull, site of the 2010 volcano eruption. 3 nights stay in Skaftafell area.

Day 3: SKAFTAFELL (15 km/9 miles)
Vatnajökull is Europe's largest glacier and National Park that includes numerous huge glacier tongues that descend to the sandy outwash plains which stretch south to the coast. Spend a full day exploring Vatnajökull/Skaftafell National Park. There is a lot to do here if you like hiking, which varies from rather easy to very hard. A popular hike is to Svartifoss waterfall. For a long hike we recommend the route to Kristínartindar mountains, about 7 hours.

Day 4: VATNAJÖKULL (140 km/87 miles)
Jökulsárlón, the lagoon at the mouth of Vatnajökull glacier, is several kilometeres long and wide and covered with icebergs that break off the glacier. We recommend a boat tour on the glacier lagoon and also a stroll along the black lava sand beach that is covered with stranded icebergs . Here you can experience the rough  North Atlantic surf. Rest of the day spend hiking in the Vatnajökull National Park region.

Day 5: EAST FJORDS (400 km/248 miles)
Travel the scenic route along the dramatic fjord landscape and through some fishing villages of East Iceland. Here you find wonderful hiking trails in the mountains and along the seashores for bird watching. Stay 2 nights in the East.

Day 6: EAST FJORDS (150 km/93 miles)
Explore the northernmost fjord on the East Fjord mountain range. The isolated village Bakkagerði has just 120 inhabitants and is a charming village, built snugly next to the steep mountainside. Driving to Borgarfjörður Eystri is dramatic and rewarding. The colorful mountains are simply unique and impressive. There is a great network of walking trails and bird watching belongs to the main activities in this area.

Day 7: IN THE EAST (100 km/62 miles)
Tour around Lake Lögurinn and explore Hallormsstadur woods, Iceland's largest forest. Hengifoss is the third highest waterfall in Iceland, 120 meters high. Set in a magnificent gorge it is reached by an invigorating hike through delightful Icelandic countryside. The scenic Fardagafoss waterfall is situated near Egilsstaðir. The walk to the fall takes about half an hour, and on your way you can enjoy the beautiful gorge and views over the whole valley. Behind the waterfall is a small cave and there is a guest book. Evening flight (not included in price) to Reykjavik. Overnight in the capital.

Day 8: DEPARTURE (49 km/30 miles)

We offer our self-drive hotel package with 4 different hotel categories

  • Budget: rooms with shared facilities 
  • Standard: rooms with private shower/wc in simple hotels, farm houses and guesthouses 
  • Comfort: rooms with private shower/wc in good tourist class hotels and farm houses 
  • Superior: rooms with private shower/wc at the best available hotels or best available room categories

Vouchers

Are sent by email 3-4 weeks prior to arrival. Voucher delivery at the first hotel of the tour is subject to a supplement of EUR 15.-

 

Tour Program

A very detailed travel itinerary will be sent by email 3-4 weeks prior to arrival, offered in English only. A 7 days itinerary is about 50 A-4 pages, a 14 days itinerary is about 80 A-4 pages, including many website links, distances in km/miles and small regional maps. Note: For tailor made or changed programs, no detailed itinerary will be provided!

 

Emergency number and information meeting

We will provide a emergency phone number access service from May to September. Information meeting with our travel experts during office hours at our travel bureau at Borgartún 34 is offered where we find a selection of brochures, travel books and maps.

 

Prices and what is included

Prices are in EUR per room for 7 nights and including breakfast. Included in hotel package is also detailed travel itinerary in English, vouchers sent by email, emergency phone number access service and information meeting during office hours at our travel bureau at Borgartún 34 in Reykjavik. Prices are based on full prepayment 3-4 weeks prior to arrival.

 

Not included

Rental car, domestic flight from Egilsstadir to Reykjavik, entrance fees and activities, detailed road maps and travel guide books are not included in above rates. These services are available at GJ-Travel for extra costs.

 

Cancellation policy

Cancellation will only be accepted in writing and must be reconfirmed by GJ-Travel in writing. Cancellations fees for GJ-Travel Hotel Packages are:

  • 14-21 days prior arrival: 20 % of full package price
  • 03-13 days prior arrival: 50 % of full package price
  • 0-02 days prior arrival and no-shows: 100 % of full package price

Change of reservation

EUR 50 changing fees if clients wish to change a reservation 2 weeks after booking confirmation.

 

Children discount

Children 3-12 years sharing room with 2 full paying guests: Pay EUR 35 net per day including breakfast.
This tour is available in Single, Double and Triple rooms. No family rooms available for this tour.

Children up to 2 years of age sharing room with parents: free of charge
