South Coast & Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon

Tour available from 16 May 2010 - 19 Sep 2010
This tour takes us along the beautiful south shore of Iceland to the extraordinary glacial lagoon, Jökulsárlón. We will pass some charming villages as well as Skaftafell National Park and visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall that is a narrow but high waterfall, plunging over the mountainside into a shallow pool. A path lies at the bottom of the cliffs where it cascades down, offering a safe and easy opportunity to walk behind the waterfall and out the other side. It is an amazing experience to stand in the hollow at the back of the falls, making it possible to look out through the curtain of water. Wear a rain jacket and take something to protect your camera from the spray. The noise of the falls is impressively magnified.

We visit also Skógafoss waterfall, 60m (197ft) high, that is one of the most impressive in the country and the final in a series of 20 waterfalls on Skógaá River from its source at Fimmvörðuháls on the mountains overlooking the area. You can walk to the foot of Skógafoss, behind which the area’s first settler, Þrasi, is said to have hidden a chest of gold in a cave.

Just before we reach the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon we pass Iceland’s biggest volcano, Öræfajökull glacier which has the highest peak of the island, Hvannadalshnjúkur (2110 m). After we arrive at the lagoon we have some time to view this stunning area before we take a boat tour on the lagoon. The boats that carry us are no ordinary boats as they are capable of driving short distances on land as well as sailing on the water. Jökulsárlón started to form in the early nineteen twenties and is getting bigger every year. You will see many amazing blocks of ice that have broken off Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatnajökull, as they sail slowly towards the ocean which is only a kilometer away. Jökulsárlón, translated “glacial river lagoon” is several kilometres long and wide and is one of Iceland’s deepest lakes. Icebergs, the size of a football field, break off from the glacier that spills into the lagoon. Boat trips take visitors on a thrilling ride among the icebergs, which can be gleaming white, mottled with sediment, cobalt blue or jade green, depending on their size and age, and on whether they have flipped over. After a refreshing boat tour on the lagoon, we head back to Reykjavík.
