LANGJÖKULL GLACIER ADVENTURE 8X8
This bus tour takes you through the farming district of Borgarfjörður, visiting the highest-flow hot spring in Europe Deildartunguhver, flow rate of 180L per second. You will visit the Lavawaterfalls, Hraunfossar and onwards through the woodlands of Húsafell and up to the desert highlands by Langjökull glacier. At the roots of the glacier we board our Ice Explorer 8x8 truck which will take you to the top of Europe‘s second largest glacier Langjökull. We will explore the glacier and experience the unique traveling on top of the snow on a thick solid glacier. We will learn about its movements and see how the melting water forms rivers and lagoons. Furthermore we will see how the glacier is melting because of global warming. In the afternoon we continue by bus over the highland track of Kaldidalur to the national park of Þingvellir and from there back to Reykjavík.

This bus tour takes you through the farming district of Borgarfjörður, visiting the highest-flow hot spring in Europe Deildartunguhver, flow rate of 180L per second. The water emerges at 97 °C. Next stop is at Hraunfossar (meaning "lava falls") which is an intriguing series of springs coming out of the Hallmundarhraun lava flow appearing like a long 900m strand of cascades laced within the rough grooves of the lava. Continue onwards through the woodlands of Húsafell and up to the desert highlands by Langjökull glacier. At the roots of the glacier we board our Ice Explorer 8x8 truck which will take you to the top of Europe‘s second largest glacier Langjökull.
The ICE Explorer is a giant vehicle built for NATO by the manufacturer MAN and with it's big tires it gives this 30 ton vehicle the possibility to float on the top of the snow, touching the ground with less weight than a man walking or 1-2000 kg per m2 (square meter). With its 8 wheels on 4 axles it can easily cross the most difficult terrain which others cannot . The difflocks on all the wheels give 100% traction on difficult terrain. Crossing rivers or glaciers with full safety is not a problem for this ICE Explorer. We will explore the glacier and experience the unique traveling on top of the snow on a thick solid glacier. We will learn about its movements and see how the melting water forms rivers and lagoons. Furthermore we will see how the glacier is melting because of global warming. We travel by the Ice Explorer 8x8 from an altitude of 500 m to the top of the glacier, about 1.400 m over sea level where at good weather the view over the glacier and the interior highlands is breathtaking. At some places the ice is between 500-700 meter thick and you will be able to walk on the glacier and spy into the crevesses. We spend about 2,5-3 hours on Langjökull glacier.
In the afternoon we continue by bus over the highland track of Kaldidalur to the national park of Þingvellir and UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is one of the country’s most sacred site, home of the oldest existing parliament in the world, the Alþingi, and major events in Iceland's history. Thingvellir is a place of fascinating natural beauty, one of the most geologically spectacular, set on a vast plain flanked by large fissures, right on Iceland’s largest lake, Thingvallavatn. The Great Atlantic rift is clearly visible; a rift that is slowly pulling Iceland apart along tectonic plates and you can literally walk between the American and Eurasian continental plates. From Þingvellir it is about 30 minutes back to Reykjavík. This tour is operated June 1st to August 31st.
