Skaftafell National Park
One of Iceland’s foremost areas of natural beauty, Skaftafell and its surroundings have been a National Park since 1967, but only since the Ring Road – Route #1, around the island was completed in 1974, in celebration of Iceland’s 1100th anniversary, has the area opened up to visitors. Until then, the cluster of farms had been completely cut off from the rest of the country by swift-flowing unbridged glacial rivers. Not even rats had figured out a way of getting there. Skaftafell’s great attraction is ice – and plenty of it. Within the national park boundaries, now enlarged to include two-thirds of the island’s largest ice cap, are numerous huge tongues of glacier that descend to the sandy outwash plains which stretch south to the coast. The glaciers spill down from the outer edge of Vatnajökull, whose 8,400sq km (3,233sq miles) of ice is 1,000m (3,300ft) thick in places. Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland was founded on June 7, 2008. It is the largest National Park in Europe, covering around 12.000 km² (12% of the surface of Iceland), including all of Vatnajökull glacier, the current Skaftafell National Park, Jökulsárgljúfur National Park and surrounding area.

At  Skaftafell National Park there is a lot to do here if you like walking, which varies from rather easy to very hard. Trail maps are available from the Skaftafell Information Centre. Probably the most popular, and easiest walk, is from the Centre to the foot of Skaftafellsjökull glacial tongue (1-1.5 hours). Most of this is path is surfaced, but to get to the glacier or wander near its snout you have to go over loose moraine. For the more adventurous there is a network of paths, which criss-cross the park. Those nearest to the Visitors centre are the most clearly marked and well maintained. Most of these involve a climb from the Centre. Many people go up to the columnar waterfall at Svartifoss (1-1.5 hours) and the view point on Sjónarsker, both worthwhile. A little further is Sjónarnípa which is a magnificent viewpoint over the glacier and worth the effort (once you’re up, it’s also virtually flat to get there!). Walking boots or sturdy shoes are advisable for these hikes and be prepared for wet trails.
