DAY EXCURSIONS FROM NARSARSUAQ - SOUTH GREENLAND

Narsarsuaq with its international airport is the gateway to South Greenland. It is situated at the end of Erics Fiord next to the original settlement of Eric the Red and the beautiful Qooroq glacier.

The indicated prices are per person unless otherwise stated. Prices may change without prior notice due to specific conditions at the time and place of the excursion. Please note that not all excursions are available during every semi-escorted tour-programme that includes this destination. Please refer to the tour-programme for a list of excursions available on that particular tour.

U0: Excursion package designed for short stay tours
To secure a full experience during a short stay in South Greenland we have designed this excursion package including U1,U4 & U11 Please see descriptions below.

U1: Eric the Red's Viking Ruins
We cross Eric's Fiord by boat and go ashore at the sheep breeding settlement Qassiarsuk, situated on the very spot where Eric the Red in year 985 settled and named his farm "Brattahlið". We visit the ruins of Eric's Farm and Thorhildur's church, the first christian church on the american continent.

U3: The Village of Igaliku
By boat through the ice filled Eric's Fiord to Itilleq where we go ashore next to some of the biggest agricultural fields in South Greenland. We walk 4 km (transportation can be arranged at a surcharge) to Igaliku - a beautiful village where the ruins of the Vikings' Cathedral and the Bishop's Farm are situated. After lunch we walk through the village back 4 km to Itilleq and by boat back to Narsarsuaq.

U4: Qooroq Ice Fiord
The Greenland Ice Cap is producing 250 mill. tons of ice every year when icebergs are breaking off the glaciers. Close to Narsarsuaq the Qooroq Glacier is filling up the fiord with beautiful white and blue icebergs. We cruise in between the icebergs and go as close to the calving glacier as possible. Here we turn off the engine to enjoy the silence only disturbed by the creaking ice.
Duration: 3 hours (approx.) / Price: DKK 600 including refreshment

U6: Hike to the Ice Cap
This excursion demands that participants are able to walk at least 6 km in mountain terrain. We go by bus as far as the road leads and continue by foot through the "Flower Valley" where the colorful sub arctic flora can be experienced. Lunch at the top of a 300 m high mountain from where we have a fantastic view over the glacier and the Ice Cap. For participants in good physical shape it will be possible to walk down and touch the Ice Cap.

U7: By Helicopter to the Ice Cap
We fly by helicopter to Bredefiord. A ground stop makes it possible to leave the helicopter and enjoy the fantastic scenery: The beautiful Ice filled fiord and to the north the Inland Ice Cap. Alternative routing depending on the weather. Operation is depending on the weather and helicopter capacity. Min. 15 participants.
Duration: 1 hour (approx.) /  Price: DKK 2000 - Only to be booked locally!

U11: Short Hike to the Ridge
We drive by bus to the beginning of the ridge. Here we find a great varity of flowers and plants. From the top we have an amazing view over the Flower Valley, the river, the fiord and the Narsarsuaq Glacier.
Duration: 3 hours (approx.) / Price: DKK 250

Note:
All prices of boat excursions are listed as start/end Narsarsuaq Harbour, which is situated approx. 1½ km from the hotel or approx. 15min. easy walk. Optional transport by bus is offered at DKK 25 p.p. one way. Is to be paid directly on the spot.
