5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS COMBINATION TASIILAQ & KULUSUK

IN EAST GREENLAND

Come experience the true culture of the Greenlandic people in the land of the polar bears on this 5 day tour from Reykjavik! Because of the geographical location of East Greenland, the villages of Kulusuk and Tasiilaq, also known as Ammassalik, have been relatively isolated in relation to the rest of Greenland and the world in general. Here a unique dialect is spoken and the original native "drum dance" is still performed. In fact the area was only "discovered" by Europeans a little over 100 years ago. The savage mountains, spectacular icebergs and picturesque villages will amaze even the most experienced travelers. This trip offers three overnights in Tasiilaq and one overnight stay in Kulusuk and is a must for those looking for something new!

5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS COMBINATION TASIILAQ & KULUSUK

IN EAST GREENLAND

Ammassalik is known to local residents as Tasiilaq which in East Greenlandic means something resembling a lake. Tasiilaq is the largest village in East Greenland with about 1,400 residents. The town has a picturesque setting in a fjord surrounded by high mountains and bisected by a small river that flows through the town. As it is only just over 100 years since the first Europeans came to the area, the traditional Inuit culture still plays an important role in day-to-day life.

Tasiilaq is only a 10-minute helicopter ride from Kulusuk, but this short flight is one of the most scenic expeditions imaginable as you cross the ice-filled sea separating these two mountainous islands. The town of Tasiilaq lies just south of the Arctic Circle and boasts long hours of daylight in the summer and the splendor of the northern lights in the winter. During the summer, activities include hiking and climbing for people of all abilities, as well as helicopter trips to the ice sheet or glaciers. Sea kayaking and sailing on the fjord between icebergs, whale safaris and angling are all popular activities.

Kulusuk lies on a small rocky island between saw-toothed mountains and extensive fjords, and it is almost always surrounded by icebergs and a glittering Arctic Ocean. In Kulusuk you will find some of the east coast’s most skilful craftsmen, whose tupilaks are of exceptional quality. Traditional hunting and fishing are still essential sources of income for many families in the settlement. While staying in Kulusuk there is time to explore the area. Ruins of tiny stone-houses which in use until the sixties can be visited. A view point on top on the mountain top can be reached by car or hiking (weather permitted) in order to experience the fantastic surroundings with high mountains and crystal blue water in which impressive icebergs are floating. The hotel rents out fishing equipment and mountain bikes.
