DAY TOUR KULUSUK - EAST GREENLAND

Only a two-hour flight from Reykjavik will take us to Greenland’s beautiful East Coast, home of the Ammassalik Inuit. Kulusuk is the gateway to East Greenland and the small settlement is an excellent introduction to the way of life in a settlement in the Ammassalik area. Kulusuk lies on a small rocky island between saw-toothed mountains and extensive fjords, and it is almost always surrounded by icebergs and a glittering Arctic Ocean. In Kulusuk you will find some of the east coast’s most skilful craftsmen, whose tupilaks are of exceptional quality. Traditional hunting and fishing are still essential sources of income for many families in the settlement.

DAY TOUR KULUSUK - EAST GREENLAND

Visiting Greenland

Since you have already travelled as far as Iceland, why not now write another thrilling chapter in your northern adventure by visiting Greenland, which is only a two-hour flight away.

The little village of Kulusuk

Greenland is home to a hardy Inuit population of 56,000, spread sparsely along the east and west coasts. These charming and hospitable people continue to live a traditional life of fishing and sealing in what is one of the world's harshest but most beautiful environments. The little village of Kulusuk is situated on the island Kulusuk. There you will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the ancient Inuit culture, best reflected in the beautiful craftsmanship of the carvings done in tusk and bone.

One of your most cherished memories

The beauty of the country's natural wilderness, combined with the Inuit cultural experience, may very well mean that your visit to Greeland will rank as one of your most cherished memories. Our guides will escort us on a 45-60 mintues walk from the airport to the engaging village Kulusuk where we can stroll about and meet some of the 360 local residents an d view their quality crafts. Weather permitting, we’ll be treated to kayaking demonstrations and an ancient drum dance reflective of the indigenous culture. On our return flight to Reykjavík we enjoy a spectacular view over huge glaciers and floating icebergs (we recommend travelers to wear good walking boots). The Kulusuk day tour is available daily except Sundays from 03106 - 08.09. and you will spend about 4,5 hours in Kulusuk.

The tour guide is awaiting you at Kulusuk airport. Tours are guided in English only. It is a 45-60 minutes walk from the airport to Kulusuk village. No transportation is available. Therefore you must be reasonably fit to master the walk partly through snow and difficult terrain. We highly recommend to bring good walking shoes along and a daybag with something to drink (can be bought in the duty free store at Reykjavik airport after you pass security check) and a picnic lunch. or snacks. It is not always possible to buy food & beverage at the local supermarket in Kulusuk. Weather permitting, we’ll be treated to kayaking demonstrations and an ancient drum dance reflective of the indigenous culture. You stay about 4,5 hours in Kulusuk.

Some extra notes and what also meets the eye:
It has to be said that springtime in Kulusuk not only brings life to the beautiful arctic flowers. Actually, before you see the flowers we have a blooming period for old litter. When the snow starts melting fast in April it also reveals litter accumulated during wintertime. As soon as the snow has melted the litter is collected. It’s a problem, and Ammassalik Municipality is currently working on a recycling solution. On paydays and weekends you might see someone who are under the influence of alcohol in Kulusuk. However, people are friendly and tourists are very appreciated, so if you should be contacted by a person in party-mode, it’ll never be in an aggressive way. If you don’t feel up for a long discussion in broken English, just smile and walk on.
The only public toilet facilities in Kulusuk are in the church. Therefore we highly recommend using the toilet facilities during the flight and at Kulusuk airport. There might be a boat tour available between Kulusuk village and Kulusuk airport. According to our latest information, the company has no proper insurance and fees can only be paid in cash and therefore should you decide to join the boat tour it will be on your own responsibility. This boat tour cannot be booked in advance.

Monica, Buenos Aires, June 2011
