Tour 3: The Best of the Faroe Islands

Self-Drive Program 11 days / 10 nights

The Faroe Islands was recently chosen by the National Geographic Traveler as the world’s most appealing islands. They earned high marks for being genuine and unspoilt and for the fact that they were likely to remain so. They were also praised for having a strong cultural integrity, superb green landscape and a well preserved nature. We are proud to be able to welcome you to the Faroe Islands.

Day 1, Sunday:
Arrive with Atlantic Airways to Vágar Airport. Collect your hire car. We suggest a short drive to the village of Gásadalur which was the last village to be connected to the road infrastructure. Enjoy the stillness and the view across to Tindhólm. From the village of Sandavágur you can see the Trøllkonufingur cliff, also known as Kongespiret. Overnight accommodation on Vágoy.

Day 2, Monday: Day trip to the island of Mykines. See at close hand the impressive gannets that only breed on Mykinesholm and the charming puffins with the colourful beaks. You must cross a footbridge over the Atlantic Ocean in order to come out to Mykinesholm and the lighthouse. You can buy coffee at the Kristianshus café back in the village. Overnight accommodation on Vágoy.

Day 3, Tuesday:
Take the  ferry Smyril to Suðuroy. On the two hour trip you pass the islands of Sandoy, Stóra Dímun and Lítla Dímun. On arrival in Suðuroy, you drive to your overnight accommodation. You will be met by a local driver/guide who will take you on a tour of this wonderful island which is rich in stories, legends and breathtaking views. The itinerary of the excursion will be dictated by the weather, lunch is provided. Overnight on Suðuroy.

Day 4, Wednesday:
The day is free to explore, visit the local tourist office for information and walking maps. Enjoy a coffee in the Gl. Kongelige Handel (historic royal shop) also called Pubbin. These are all historic buildings that were originally Danish monopoly shops. Overnight accommodation on Suðuroy.

Day 5, Thursday: Return by ferry to Tórshavn. Visit historic Tinganes where you will find the Government’s main building, which houses also the Prime Minister’s office, at the tip of Tinganes. Also in this area is the charming part of Tórshavn called Reyn, an historic area where you can explore the small alleyways between the grassroofed houses. Overnight accommodation in Tórshavn.

Day 6, Friday: Take the ferry to the neighbouring island of Nólsoy. Life moves at a slow pace in this little village with wide open spaces and very few cars. You will be met by a local guide who will tell you stories and show you Ro Ove’s boat the Diana Victoria. Ro Ove is a local hero who rowed single-handed to Langelinje in Denmark to kiss the Little Mermaid! Enjoy lunch in the little coffee house before returning to Tórshavn. We recommend you visit the historic cultural centre of Kirkjubø in the afternoon. Overnight accommodation in Tórshavn.

Day 7, Saturday:
Drive to Vestmanna and enjoy a sailing trip to the fantastic Vestmanna bird cliffs, sailing in between the cliffs and into the grottoes.Afterwards, drive to the Northern Islands. The first you come to is Borðoy, home to Klaksvík, the Faroe Islands most important fishing port. If there is time, we suggest that you continue to the beautiful village of Viðareiði on Viðoy. Overnight accommodation in Klaksvík.

Day 8, Sunday: Take the ferry to the island of Kalsoy, popularly known as “the recorder”, a strange name that stems from the 12 km long road that passes through 4 tunnels connecting the island’s four villages. The village of Trollanes lies furthest north. Here you can visit the Faroese forge and find out about its history in the working Economuseum Mikkjals Ironworks. You can also enjoy a fantastic walk to the lighthouse on the northern tip of Kalsoy. The village of Mikladalur, renowned for its artists and sagas, is well worth a visit. Overnight accommodation in Klaksvík.

Day 9, Monday: Begin the day in Gjógv, known for its distinctive natural harbour. There you have the opportunity to take a 2 hour walk using a map which describes the route in short stories. Enjoy the breathtaking views. Overnight accommodation on Eysturoy.

Day 10, Tuesday: Visit the fish auction in Toftir and Navia, the charming wool shop that sells beautiful woollen products designed in the latest fashion. Make time to see the charming old rectoory in the village of Nes before enjoying a light lunch. Overnight accommodation on Eysturoy.

Day 11, Wednesday: On the drive back to the airport, we suggest you stop north of Eiði to see the famous view of “Risin og Kellingin”, two free-standing cliffs, that according to legend, were a couple who turned to stone when they tried to move the Faroe Islands to Iceland! You will also pass the Faroe Islands highest mountain Slættaratindur (882m). Deliver the hire car in time for your departure with Atlantic Airways.
