Iceland Spa News

September 2011: One of Iceland's main attractions is its abundance of geothermally heated water, used for bathing in countless thermal pools of all kinds. The capital area alone has 16 thermal pools in addition to numerous luxurious spas and the world famous Blue Lagoon on its doorstep.
Recently, two new spa attractions have come onto the scene: the brand new Laugarvatn Fontana Spa, and the newly and extensively renovated Sóley Natura Spa at the Reykjavík Hotel Natura.

Laugarvatn Fontana Spa
The Laugarvatn Fontana Spa is located on the popular "Golden Circle" route from Reykjavík, about a one hour's drive from the city. This brand new spa is built on tradition, sitting on the steamy waters of Lake Laugarvatn that have been enjoyed by locals for a long time. The spa has a series of interconnecting open-air baths, a steam room, and a sauna all heated geothermally. Travellers can unwind and relax in the warm waters and steam which is heated naturally to between 40°C - 50°C. Many day tour operators now feature Fontana Spa in their "Golden Circle" packages, but for those who prefer to drive themselves, Laugarvatn town is conveniently located between Thingvellir National Park and the Geysir hot spring area.

Sóley Natura Spa
Inspired by Iceland’s unique surroundings and natural resources, the Sóley Natura Spa opened in spring 2011 in the newly renovated Hotel Reykjavik Natura. The spa offers some of Reykjavik’s most exclusive beauty and massage treatments, along with completely re-designed facilities that have been created to soothe both body and mind. The spa features Icelandic brand Sóley Organics, combining an ingenious blend of wild Icelandic herbal ingredients, aromatic essentials oils and a holistic approach to treating the individual needs of body and skin. The spa also features a salt water pool, sauna, hot tub and special relaxation areas.

New Flight Destination: Denver

19.09.2011 Icelandair has announced a route schedule for 2012 which will be the largest in the company's history. A new year-round destination, Denver, Colorado, will be added, and the frequency of flights to various cities in the United States and Europe will be increased. The company’s strategy is to increase the flow of tourists to Iceland outside the high season; this was an influential factor in the decision to introduce year-round flights to and from Denver because of its strong winter market, including the market for ski tours. In addition to four weekly flights to the new Denver destination, Icelandair will increase its number of flights to Washington, DC and Seattle and add more capacity from Manchester and Glasgow. In total, Icelandair will fly to 31 destinations next year. Hjörvar Sæberg Högnason, General Manager –UK and Ireland, said "With our new destination of Denver and increased capacity from both Manchester and Glasgow, we are giving our passengers more options and flexibility. We provide an exciting way to travel to many of the top destinations in North America with some of the best elapsed travel times in the industry. Plus our passengers can take advantage of an Iceland stopover which is truly unique.“ Icelandair bases its route network on the central location of Iceland between northern Europe and North America. The route network enables Icelandair to serve three markets: the domestic market in Iceland, the tourist market with Iceland as a destination, and the international market between Europe and North America. The tourist market to Iceland is showing a growth of 20% this year. Icelandair is one of Iceland‘s longest established companies, connecting the world and Iceland for over 70 years. Icelandair flies from the UK to Iceland with connecting service to Boston, Denver, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York City, Orlando, Seattle, Washington, DC, Halifax and Toronto.

Record Year for Tourism Tourist numbers

Another Record Year for Tourism Tourist numbers so far this year have surpassed last years’; if the trend continues, the total number of tourists visiting Iceland in 2011 will reach a record 600,000. This equals a 20% increase on last years’ record 500,000. This surge in tourist numbers has a number of explanations, including increased airline capacity and new destinations, the international publicity created by the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption in 2010 and the success of the Inspired by Iceland marketing campaign following the eruption. Although all major geographical markets are showing strong growth, there has been a marked increase in the number of visitors from the USA this year due to increased flight supply from the US market. There is reason to be optimistic about the coming months as well. Airline bookings for the 4th quarter are up by 30% compared to last year and preparations are underway for another major marketing campaign specially focused on promoting Iceland as a winter destination.

Reykjavík in a Holiday Mood in December

Never before has there been so many things to choose from and enjoy in Reykjavík in December as this year. The city prides itself of three Christmas markets, one in the city centre, one in Hafnarfjordur and one in the woodlands of Heidmork just outside the city. All three very charming and different from the next. Children can write letters to Santa Claus at the House of Esja, in the foothills of Mt. Esja North of Reykjavík. Christmas buffets are served all over town and the recreational valley Laugardalur has put on a Christmas mode, with a relaxed Christmas atmosphere. Reykjavik Zoo & Family Park welcomes the Yule lads one each day from December 12. Café Flóra will host events like small Brass bands, Choirs, homemade Christmas decoration and more. At the Indoor Skating Rink people can skate around the Christmas tree and afterwards take a walk through the Botanical garden. CNNGo.com chose Reykjavík as #1Travel Destination for Christmas 2010. Perhaps one of the most important reason for that choice is that Iceland has 13 Santas instead of just as in most countries, also known as Yule Lads with names like the spoon licker, the door slammer and window peeper. Spooky names but these are funny guys have already started to treat children in Reykjavik with some goodies in the shoe. It is a tradition in Iceland to put one shoe in the window and wait for the Santas to come to town, one by one. However, you need to behave! If not, danger is that you will end up with a potato in your shoe if you don´t.

Imagine Reykjavik Event Oct 9th-Dec 8th 2010

Iceland-Greenland flights continue over the winter

Iceland – Greenland flights set to continue over winterIceland’s biggest domestic carrier, Air Iceland, is set to increase its Greenland service by offering flights to three Greenlandic towns all year round, RUV reports. Trade between Iceland and Greenland has been increasing fast and Air Iceland feels confident that year-round services to Nuuk, Kulusuk and Constable Point will prove viable. Until now, Air Iceland has run services, primarily for tourists, to five Greenlandic destinations in summertime only. There has been great demand for flights in winter, as there is a rapidly increasing flow of Icelandic developers and engineers to Greenland and Greenlandic medical patients to Iceland. Aside from Iceland, Greenland’s only international flight connection is to Copenhagen.
